Let’s Go Back to 1976... 50 Years of Essex Beds.

Picture the scene. It’s 1976. You’re a young adult living in Essex and, thankfully, nobody has invented the smartphone yet.
Your bedroom is a sea of orange, brown and questionable floral patterns. There’s a lava lamp glowing on your bedside table, a landline telephone with a cord that never quite stretches far enough, and your favourite records stacked beside the turntable.
There’s no Netflix. No scrolling through TikTok before bed. No asking Alexa to turn the lights off.
And if you want to speak to your friends, you actually have to phone them. On the house phone. Where everyone can hear you.
A Saturday Night in Essex, 1976
The weekend arrives and there’s plenty happening.
If you’re around Southend, you might be heading to the legendary Kursaal Ballroom. In 1976 alone, its stage welcomed the likes of Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Hawkwind and local favourites the Kursaal Flyers.
T. Rex played the Cliffs Pavilion that February, while just up the road in Chelmsford, the Sex Pistols were beginning to make some serious noise.
Or perhaps live music isn’t your thing.
You might be heading for a night at Talk of the South, one of Southend’s best-known clubs of the era, before eventually making your way home.
No Uber waiting outside.
No WhatsApp message to say you got home safely.
And certainly no Instagram Stories documenting the entire evening.
Eventually, you make it back to that wonderfully 70s bedroom, put the needle on a record and climb into bed.
Maybe you’re listening to ABBA, Queen, David Bowie, The Eagles or one of the other huge names providing the soundtrack to the decade.
And somewhere else in Essex, something else is beginning...
Essex Beds Opens Its Doors
1976 was the year Essex Beds was established.
While fashions, music and bedrooms have changed beyond recognition in the years since, Essex Beds began doing something that remains at the heart of the business today:
Helping the people of Essex find the right bed and enjoy a better night’s sleep.
Fast forward 50 years and things look rather different.
The floral wallpaper has gone.
The lava lamp probably has too.
Our alarm clocks have become smartphones. Records became CDs, then downloads, then streaming. TVs became enormous, phones became tiny and then enormous again, and the way we shop has completely changed.
We can now order almost anything from the sofa and have it arrive at our door.
But some things are still better done properly.
Some Things Haven’t Changed
Choosing a bed is personal.
What feels comfortable to one person might be completely wrong for another. How you sleep, the support you need and the comfort you prefer all matter.
That’s why, 50 years later, you can still walk into Essex Beds, lie down on a mattress, try different options and talk to someone who genuinely knows beds.
No guessing from an online description.
No wondering what “medium-firm” is actually going to feel like when it arrives.
Just friendly, knowledgeable advice to help you find what’s right for you.
Trends have come and gone. High streets have changed. Shops have opened and closed.
But we’re still here.
50 Years. Three Essex Showrooms.
Today, Essex Beds has showrooms in Southend-on-Sea, Hadleigh and Maldon, helping thousands of people from Essex and the surrounding areas find a better night’s sleep every year.
A lot has changed since that first year in 1976, but the principles behind Essex Beds haven't.
Great beds. Expert knowledge. Personal service.
And the opportunity to actually try your bed before you buy it.
From the orange floral bedrooms and lava lamps of 1976 to the beautiful bedrooms of 2026, we’ve been there through five decades of changing styles, changing technology and changing lives.
And we’re looking forward to whatever the next 50 years bring.
Were You Part of Our Story?
As we celebrate 50 years of Essex Beds, we’d love to hear from the people who have been part of that journey.
Have you bought a bed from Essex Beds over the years?
Perhaps you bought your first bed from us. Maybe your parents shopped with us. Perhaps you came back years later to buy beds for your own children.
We’d love to hear your memories.
Tell us your Essex Beds story and help us celebrate 50 years of helping Essex sleep better.
1976–2026
Still here. Still local. Still helping Essex sleep better.
Sleep Better, Essex.
